"Medicare will go broke by 2019, but will begin impacting the rest of the federal budget as soon as 2011. That gloomy assessment is contained in the annual report of the trustees of Medicare and Social Security, which was released yesterday.
Last year’s “go broke” date was 2026, but that was before Congress piled President Bush’s expensive prescription drug benefit on top of the already insolvent Medicare program. Thanks to the irresponsibility of President Bush and the Congress, the problem has become acute – it simply can’t be put off any longer.
Neither President Bush nor Senator Kerry seems willing to tackle this problem. Libertarians will. "
Gary Nolan has won his fourth election victory, handily defeating four challengers in the March 2 Massachusetts Libertarian primary. Here are the official results, which were finally released earlier today (March 16):

In August of 2000 I warned that voting for Bush was a very big mistake. Many people complained to me that Bush was a good conservative who would be good for the economy and national defense. I was right, they were wrong. Bush turned out to be worse than my wildest dreams. Today I will present some alternatives for 2004.
With Bush being a full-blown disaster in terms of the economy, foreign policy, and social policy, my fellow economists should be dragging their tails between their legs in shame. In retrospect, Al Gore would have been far better. He probably would not have gotten us into war or increased government spending by the outrageous amounts that have occurred under Bush. He certainly would not have gone against the UN and 500 Americans would still be alive today, not to mentions thousands of Iraqis. There is even some small possibility that he could have salvaged the World Conference on Racism and produced a more tolerable result for all parties. A dimwitted Democrat and a leaderless Republican Congress would have prevented the worst excesses of both parties. Without 9/11, Greenspan might have allowed for the normal recession and correction of all the investment excesses of the late 1990s and today we would be in a real, not phony, recovery.
What did my fellow economists present as the benefits of a Bush presidency? He would strengthen Social Security, cut taxes, institute education vouchers, hold down the growth of government, strengthen national defense, pay down the debt, and promote free trade. Really?
He did pass a small cut in taxes, but tax cuts without decreases in government spending are practically meaningless. Social Security has been "strengthened" with the prescription drug giveaway, a mammoth increase in government spending that greatly undermines the financial solvency of Social Security and drives up drug prices for the rest of us. Bush's "No Child Left Behind" is an illogical policy that will only serve to further entrench Washington bureaucracy in your local public schools. Government spending has skyrocketed with record rates of growth and the phony surplus has been turned into very real and gigantic deficits. Bush has not used his veto power, but this supposed free trader has used protectionist measures to insult our allies and threatened the globe with a protectionist trade war. Meanwhile the dollar is dropping like a stone.
The favorite of my prognostications from August of 2000 would have surely alarmed some members of Bush's foreign policy and energy policy advisory teams, were they avid readers of Mises.org:
Bush's "ideas to hold down the growth of government will not work and we already spend enough on national defense unless you have in mind getting America involved in even more international conflicts like Yugoslavia, Iraq, Somalia, etc."
The alternative to Bush is Senator John Kerry, but he is no real alternative. Bush's Skull and Cross Bone Yalie brother supports the welfare state, the warfare state, and the war on drugs. He voted for the war in Iraq, the Patriot Act, deficit spending, prescription drug benefits, and even opposes medical marijuana. Where Bush combines the public speaking ability of a ranch hand with the humility of an evangelical Christian on cocaine, Kerry is the second coming of the ultra-liberal Edmund Muskie and the poster boy of special interests groups.
The one alternative is simply not to vote. That's always the best alternative unless you have the opportunity to vote for a truly good candidate who will not compromise your liberty. Politicians hate it when people do not vote because they need your vote to legitimatize their power.
Then there is Aaron Russo, a candidate for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination. Unlike Bush and Kerry who come from privileged backgrounds and wealth and have no real world accomplishments, Russo comes from a modest family background and is an accomplished entrepreneur. Most famous as a Hollywood producer, his management talents have been recognized with an Emmy, a Tony, Golden Globe nominations, and many gold and platinum records, as well as six Academy Award nominations for his films and a NAACP Image award.
Russo's strategy is to attack Bush and Kerry (BK) on issues where they are allies in destroying our freedom. BK supported the war on Iraq, the Patriot Act, huge increases in government spending and debt, and both oppose medical marijuana. BK supported gun control measures.
Russo opposes BK on all of these issues. The beauty here is that he can attack Kerry where he is weak with his liberal base, on such issues as voting for war, the Patriot Act and opposing medical marijuana. He can attack Bush where he is weak with the conservatives, on such issues as the huge increases in government spending, gun control, and prescription drug benefits. They are both guilty in all of this havoc.
He also is making preemptive strikes against the coming military draft and stopping illegal immigrants from getting on the federal dole. He hopes to unite supporters in the sound money, gun rights, alternative medicine, medical marijuana, anti-draft, and anti-war movements. With no celebrity candidates propping up the Reform and Green parties, he hopes to be able to draw votes from all the third parties and independent votes, especially if he gets some support from his Hollywood friends like Bette Midler and Jack Nicholson.
I met Russo this past week and found him to be an intelligent and thoughtful man. More importantly he is charismatic, sincere, and emotional, and breaths life into the defense of liberty. In the past, the Libertarian Party has had some tremendous people run for the presidency, but they have always been too intellectual for the task.
Most major party candidates for president do not even read books; LP candidates write books! To arouse the American frog and to coax it out of the slowly boiling pot of lost liberty requires emotional appeal and confrontation.
If he gets into the debates he will hammer Bush and Kerry. His candidacy could derail the drive to bring back the draft. If nothing else, your support will send a most unwelcome message to Washington. If you vote for Bush or Kerry, you send the message that you appreciate all that they are doing and that the temperature of the water is just fine.
And now for my disclaimer: I actually do vote and am a member of the Libertarian Party. I ran for Congress in 1984 even though I was not old enough and unwittingly became the first elected Libertarian in Alabama by winning the uncontested race for Constable of Lee County in 1988. After dropping out of politics for several years, I was hoodwinked into become the Vice Chairman of the Alabama Libertarian Party, then the Chairman, and then their Candidate for US Senate all in a 24 hours period in 1996. I was endorsed by the Reform Party ( their first Libertarian endorsement ), lost badly in the election, but was appointed to a junior cabinet position by the Republican governor who had also been elected to the position twenty years earlier as a Democrat. Is that clear?

Believe it or not, there is a nation that conducts allegedly “free and fair” elections where:
* The presidential candidates of the country’s two dominant political parties receive massive taxpayer subsidies to fund their campaigns, while their opponents receive no taxpayer subsidies and are strictly limited in how much money they can raise to compete.
* The same two-party oligarchy has conspired to set up a phony, supposedly “non-partisan” commission, controlled by them, to sponsor presidential debates – debates which purposely exclude contenders from all other parties. Debates funded with contributions that would be illegal if made to the candidates themselves.
* “Reverse Robin Hood” ballot-access laws impose massive petitioning requirements on opposition parties which the two dominant parties are exempt from.
That nation is us – the United States – leader of the “free” world.
The nominees of the Democratic and Republican parties will each receive over $74 million dollars in taxpayer subsidies to run their fall campaigns. The parties themselves will receive about $15 million each to run their conventions.
Meanwhile, nominees of other parties must raise all their own funds, and are legally barred from accepting more than $2,000 from a single individual.
The Commission on Presidential Debates is half Democrat – half Republican. No independents – no representatives of other parties. The commission says that only candidates with 15% support in the polls this fall will be invited to debate – knowing full well that only Bush and Kerry are likely to meet this threshold. The debates will be funded with corporate contributions that would be illegal if given to a single candidate.
Ross Perot was polling around 7% when he was invited to debate in 1992 – he went on to receive nearly 20% of the vote. Jesse Ventura, who was elected Governor of Minnesota in 1998, was polling less than 10% in September. If he had been excluded from debates, he would have never been elected Governor.
Many states impose punitive ballot access barriers on other candidates that candidates from the two-party oligarchy are exempt from. Oklahoma, for example, requires Democratic and Republican presidential candidates to merely pay a $2,500 filing fee. Other candidates must collect over 37,000 valid petition signatures, at an estimated cost of $90,000. And that’s just one state.
The United States advocates free and fair elections for other nations. Isn’t it time we set an example for the world by conducting them here at home?
The final certified results have been released for the Wisconsin Libertarian primary, and Gary Nolan's apparent 9 vote loss on election night was in fact a 76 vote victory. Here are the final, certified results:
Gary Nolan 1,490 Michael Badnarik 1,414 Uninstructed 401 Scattered write-ins 138 ========================= = Total 3,443
Gary is now three for three, with victories in Missouri, Wisconsin, and California.
To everyone in Wisconsin: THANK YOU for voting for Gary and for urging your friends and family to do the same. Your efforts really paid off.
Now we need to finish the job and make sure Gary wins the nomination at the national convention in Atlanta (May 27- 31). Here's what you can do to help:
* Attend the convention as a delegate, so you can personally vote for Gary. It's a great experience. If you might be able to attend the convention, contact: Marianne Volpe - Marianne@garynolan.com, or Justin Kempf - Justin@garynolan.com They both can also be reached at (703) 237-3533. They'll work to help you get selected as a delegate from your state.
* Attend your state convention to show your support for Gary and help persuade undecided delegates. If you think you can attend your state convention, let Marianne or Justin know.
* Join the Nolan team as a volunteer. We are looking for people in every state and every community. Marianne and Justin will help you put your time and talent to work.
* Make a contribution. We urgently need to raise funds to keep our media operation going and keep Gary and his team traveling to state conventions to line up delegates. Plus, we need to print signs, flyers, and other campaign materials, and start testing radio ads.
The legal pre-nomination limit is $2000 -- our average contribution is around $100. There are three ways to contribute:
1. You can donate online at Amazon.com. They charge lower fees than our regular service provider and we get the funds quicker. Plus, your contribution will increase Gary's total at Amazon and keep him ahead of President Bush (Gary's currently ahead by just 1 cent!). The maximum contribution through Amazon is $200. Here's the link -- just click on the link by Gary's picture and use the form on the right. http://www.amazon.com/gp/misc/flag.html/104-6310694-9387156" title="http://www.amazon.com/gp/misc/flag.html/104-6310694-9387156" target="_blank"http://www.amazon.com/gp/misc...
Although Aaron Russo, who entered the race only a few short months ago, leads the pack, he does not have a large margin over Gary Nolan, who leads among voters who may or may not attend the nominating convention in May. It will probably come down to whichever candidate can get the most supporters there. Both lead Michael Badnarik, who is trailing not far behind. None of the other candidates were able to outpoll None of the Above.

The Iraqi war is a complete fabrication and a disgrace to both political parties.
How in your wildest dreams can you trust our government when you can’t believe anything they say?
The privately owned Federal Reserve Bank is the root cause of America’s unemployment problem…they have destroyed the value of the American currency, raising the cost of living so high that American workers no longer compete…when you buy a house for one hundred thousand dollars and sell it for two hundred thousand dollars the value of the house did not go up, the value of the dollar went down, because it takes more dollars to buy the same house….It is time to install a sound money system so the cost of living stays the same from year to year.
If America is doing better, as the politicians tell us, why does it take two or more people to support a household, when before, one person could handle it?
The greatest scandal in the history of America is presently being perpetrated by the privately owned Federal Reserve Bank; it makes the Enron, WorldCom, and Tyco scandals look infantile by comparison.
For the past two months, Senator Kerry has been AWOL – Absent Without Leave – from his responsibilities as a sitting Senator. For the past two months, he’s been campaigning full-time for President – while drawing full-time pay from the taxpayers. President Bush is also campaigning for reelection on the taxpayers’ dime.
Meanwhile, candidates like me who actually work for a living can’t draw salary for not working while campaigning full-time. Under our crazy campaign finance laws, that would be considered an illegal contribution, a way of getting around contribution limits.
In my case, there’s an added wrinkle. If I had continued broadcasting my radio show while running for President, the FCC would have required every station carrying my show to offer equal time to every other candidate for President.
And this fall, it will get even worse. My campaign team and I will have to devote much of our time and energy to raising money, with contributions limited to just $2000 per person. Meanwhile, Bush and Kerry get around $70 million each from the taxpayers to run their campaigns, while continuing to draw full-time pay from the taxpayers for at best part-time work.
Politicians shouldn’t be paid for not working, and they shouldn’t campaign for office at taxpayer expense. As a small step toward fairer elections, let’s dock Bush & Kerry’s pay for every day they’re out campaigning.
And while I’m engaged in wishful thinking, why don’t we take that $140 million in political welfare and use it to pay down the national debt instead. After all, Bush and Kerry helped get us into this mess in the first place.
Gary Nolan handily defeated two challengers for the Libertarian Party's nomination for president in California’s March 2 Libertarian primary, winning 58.8 percent of the vote.
"I want to thank all the voters who supported me in California and I hope we can carry the momentum on to the national convention in Georgia," Nolan said.
Coming in second was Hollywood producer Aaron Russo with 24.7 percent, followed by Texas Libertarian Michael Badnarik with 16.5 percent. This was the first Libertarian primary in which Russo was included.
Tuesday's California primary was the third in which candidates for the Libertarian nomination for president took part.
Badnarik won the Wisconsin primary on February 17 with just nine votes more than Nolan. In the early February Missouri primary, Nolan took 874 votes (45.2 percent), beating Ruben Perez (8.5 percent) and Jeffrey Diket (7.9 percent). A hefty percentage (38.5 percent) of Libertarian voters said they were uncommitted at that time.
A Massachusetts primary was also held on March 2, but results from that election will not be available for up to a week, according to the Secretary of State's office.
The Libertarian Party’s presidential candidate will be selected by delegates at the national convention, scheduled for May 27-31 in Atlanta.
Senator John F. Kerry won the Democratic primary on Super Tuesday and President Bush is running virtually unopposed for the Republican nomination.
In other California election news, Libertarian candidates for the U.S. Senate from that state faced off, with Superior Court Judge James Gray defeating former LP California state chair Gail Lightfoot -- winning 57.2 percent of votes counted to Lightfoot's 42.8 percent.
Gray will face Democrat incumbent Senator Barbara Boxer and Republican challenger Bill Jones in the November election.
Presidential Candidate Michael Badnarik on The Issues
Michael Badnarik has studied the Constitution for twenty years, and has been teaching an eight-hour class on the subject for the last three years. All of his political positions are derived from the principle of individual rights, and are consistent with the Constitution. He would like to see strict enforcement of the Bill of Rights, and would establish a "zero tolerance policy" for all elected officials who violate the supreme law of the land.
The RIGHT to keep and bear arms Michael is most passionate about defending the Second Amendment, and holds that 20,000+ gun laws in the United States unconstitutionally infringe on our right to keep and bear arms. Americans are not required to fill out government forms in order to practice their religion, and they cannot be required to obtain government permits before they carry a gun for self-defense. Education instead of government controlled schools The Department of Health, Education and Welfare was instituted in 1953 at a time when American students ranked number one in math and science worldwide. In 2003, after fifty years of government control of our schools, we spend ten times as much per student on education, and American students now rank twenty-first in math and science. Even if the Department of Education was constitutional - which it isn't - we should eliminate that agency simply because they are doing such a terrible job. Michael's plan would be to eliminate government control of schools, making each one a private business that is required to compete with others in the area. Parents would naturally send their children to the best schools in the area, which would make a significant profit for successful schools. Other schools would either improve their ability to impart knowledge, or they would be forced out of business altogether. More on this issue »
War on Drugs The government's war on drugs violates the rights of Americans so egregiously that it is a bigger threat than the drugs themselves. Libertarians do not want our children taking drugs either, but we recognize that the several decades of drug interdiction haven't slowed the flow of narcotics into this country. Children take drugs because criminals actively sell them. Criminals sell drugs because they are astronomically profitable. Drugs are highly profitable only because they are illegal. The Libertarian solution is to decriminalize drugs, which will make drugs extremely cheap, which will remove the profit motivation for selling drugs, which will result in fewer children taking drugs. Income taxes The IRS is despised by every American old enough to work for a living. This agency is notorious for confiscating property from citizens without proper due process of law. Michael would eliminate this agency completely, without instituting a flat tax to take its place. Michael would also eliminate the NEED for an income tax by abolishing hundreds of unconstitutional offices and government programs. Americans will experience a sudden increase in their take-home pay when they no longer have money withheld from their paychecks. This will trigger rapid economic growth which means that all of the newly unemployed government workers would be able to find "real" jobs in the private sector.
Restoring a non-inflatable currency Michael would immediately eliminate the Federal Reserve Bank because Congress never had the authority to delegate the responsibility to "coin money and regulate the value thereof". Our current economic crisis has not been caused by the collapse of companies like Enron and WorldCom. They are only symptoms of a more fundamental problem. Our crisis has been caused by ninety years of inflation that has resulted from the Federal Reserve Bank printing money out of thin air.
Patriot Act It is quite possible that this is the most misleading title for any law passed in the history of America. Michael adamantly believes that the Patriot Act is a blatant violation of our rights, given that it ignores the basic concept of a "limited" federal(national) government. For all practical purposes, the Patriot Act repeals the Fourth and Sixth Amendments, and allows the government to assume powers that are not delegated to them by Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution. There are over 200 cities and nearly a dozen states that have passed resolutions declaring the Patriot Act "null and void".
American intervention in Iraq American aggression in Iraq is unconstitutional because Congress has never declared war. President Bush is not authorized to send our troops overseas simply because Congress has promised not to censure him if he does. Michael doesn't have enough information to know whether or not the United States should be there or not, however he strongly suspects that the real motivation for being there is probably economic rather than ethical. More on this issue » Read Michael's Speech on Iraq (At Washington University)
Gay marriage/gay adoption Michael is a tireless advocate of INDIVIDUAL rights, and since homosexuals qualify as individuals, Michael can find no rational reason to discriminate against them. Michael claims autonomy over his own life and who he chooses to associate with, therefore two individuals of the same sex who voluntarily choose to live together clearly have the same right to claim that autonomy. Michael also supports the right of same sex couples to raise children in a loving environment. It is ridiculous to think that raising a child in a homosexual household will cause them to become homosexual themselves. Keep in mind that 100% of all homosexuals are born to heterosexual parents, and there was apparently nothing they could do to influence their children to share their preference.
Affirmative Action There are many laws, although passed with all the best of intentions, which only alter the problems they were designed to solve. Affirmative action changes discrimination against minorities, to discrimination for minorities. There are at least two unintended consequences to this policy. First, it establishes reverse discrimination against the majority, which is no more justified than the discrimination it was supposed to eliminate. Second, it casts a shadow on any of the accomplishments achieved by minorities because it is often assumed that their success was attributed to only the policy of affirmative action. If we truly want to establish equality in America, then ALL quota systems should be abolished.
Death Penalty Having the "right to life" implies that we also have the right to keep ourselves alive in the face of a violent attack. Michael thinks that the best time to administer the death penalty is by the potential victim a few tenths of a second before the crime can be committed. (In other words, in obvious self-defense.) Michael feels that, at least philosophically, the government is perfectly justified in carrying out the death penalty for the victim and his or her survivors when there is incontrovertible evidence. Nonetheless, Michael does not feel any satisfaction in terminating anyone's life, even if they are sociopathic. For that reason, Michael would be satisfied if violent criminals sentenced to life in prison actually SPENT life in prison. Given the opportunity, Michael would like to change one aspect of prison life to increase the safety of the people guarding them. Instead of allowing them to lift weights and exercise several hours per day (making them violent AND powerful), Michael would require them to remain in bed all day for the first month, and twelve hours per day after that. This lack of activity would allow their muscles to atrophy, making them helpless couch potatoes incapable of inflicting very much violence on each other, the guards, or unsuspecting citizens should they manage to escape. Michael also likes the idea of requiring them to submit one book report a week, encouraging them to strengthen their minds instead of their bodies.
Abortion Michael would like to begin by emphasizing the fact that this is a states rights issue, and should not be handled by the federal(national) government at all. He would also like to point out that at least half of the people who read this will not be happy with his answer, therefore it would be politically expedient to refuse to comment on it. He is very proud of the fact that he never makes any decisions solely because they are politically expedient. Please have the courtesy of reading his answer completely before jumping to any predetermined conclusions. Michael used to be "pro-choice" based on the presumption that a woman owns her own body. Neither government agents nor he has any authority to mandate what she does or does not do with her body. More recently Michael came to the logical conclusion that the baby must eventually claim ownership of ITS own body, as well. The abortion debate exists because of a disagreement about precisely when that happens. At this point in time, because there is no scientific consensus, Michael chooses to error in favor of the baby, and now holds that abortion is a violation of the baby's right to life. HOWEVER, Michael would NOT use government force to enforce this personal opinion, as some have chosen to assume. Michael does not claim to have the definitive answer to this perplexing problem, but most voters feel a need to know what a candidate's thought process is on many different subjects. This answer is merely an attempt to satisfy that need.

Gary Nolan won a big victory last night in the California primary. With over 99% of precincts reporting, Gary Nolan received 58.8% of the vote, with 24.7% going to Aaron Russo and 16.5% to Michael Badnarik.
America’s in crisis and we’re facing great danger from our own government. I’ve identified twelve points every American should be alarmed about. Let’s examine what they are, and see what our government is doing:
1. Both political parties lie to us, and neither can be trusted.
2. Our economy is a disaster.
3. We’re losing our right to free speech.
4. Both parties passed the Patriot Act, a crime against all Americans.
5. Both wage war against medical marijuana and alternative medicine.
6. Both attack our right to bear arms.
7. Both parties overtax, overspend, and over-regulate.
8. Where is the gold owned by the American people? Neither party will address this issue and we need answers.
9. Both parties station our troops around the world rather than protecting our borders from terrorism and illegal immigration.
10. Both parties are guilty of starting the war in Iraq.
11. Both parties want to keep our troops there indefinitely.
12. Both parties are equally guilty for America’s youth dying there for no reason.
If you continue to vote for one of the two major parties, nothing will change, and you're wasting your vote. Voting for the lesser of two evils is still voting for evil and not an answer. Don’t waste your vote! It is time for the American people to rise up and put an end to our corrupt government, and I will be proud to lead the way.
I will bring our troops home from every corner of the globe. I’ll revoke the Patriot Act, I’ll cut taxes, cut spending, I’ll cut the size of government. I’ll stop corporate welfare. I’ll engage all nations in trade and commerce. I’ll protect our air and water, and I’ll protect our borders, but most importantly I will protect our Constitution and Bill of Rights.
My campaign is not about any single issue, it’s about government's proper role in your life. Do you want to live in an America where government is your master, or your servant?
The choice is yours. The decision is momentous.
We can clean up this government right now, but I need your help! Please forward this message to everyone in your address book….. And please donate. I’m Aaron Russo, and I’m running for President, thank you and please join me.
